Abstract

Addressing SDG-related grand challenges requires innovation models that mobilise knowledge and resources across organisational boundaries. Venture Studios have recently emerged as a promising mechanism for systematically creating and scaling purpose-driven ventures, yet their governance structures and connection with open innovation remain underexplored. Focusing specifically on Corporate Venture Studios, this chapter investigates how different governance configurations leverage collaborative innovation to address grand challenges. Drawing on the literatures on open innovation, Venture Studios, and grand challenges, the study adopts an exploratory multiple-case design combining interview and secondary data. The analysis identifies three governance configurations: Captive, Partnership-based, and Consortium-based Corporate Venture Studios, which differ in how opportunities originate, how external actors participate, and how resources and decision rights are distributed. Building on these findings, the chapter develops a framework that positions governance as the mechanism through which openness is organised and shows how different configurations can support the creation of new ventures, new applications of technologies and knowledge, strategic partnerships, and social value. The study contributes to the emerging Venture Studio literature and extends open innovation research by explaining how Corporate Venture Studios can organise cross-boundary collaboration in the context of grand challenges. The framework also provides practical guidance for corporations, policymakers and ecosystem actors seeking to design and govern Corporate Venture Studios capable of mobilising diverse actors and resources in support of SDG-related objectives.
