Firm Resilience through Open Innovation

Firms increasingly operate in uncertain and turbulent environments, where exogenous crises such as economic shocks or pandemics can threaten their survival and long-term viability. In this context, resilience has become a critical capability, enabling organizations to adapt, respond, and transform under conditions of disruption.
This line of research explores how firms, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), develop resilience through open innovation and dynamic capabilities. So far, we have demonstrated that open innovation enables firms to access external knowledge, build strategic partnerships, and identify alternative ways of operating during crises. In particular, our work explains how SMEs can structure their innovation processes across ideation, development, and commercialization to respond effectively to disruption. The findings also highlight the role of dynamic capabilities in allowing firms to reconfigure resources and leverage capabilities developed in stable periods to innovate under pressure.
Building on these findings, we are currently deepening our understanding of how open innovation and dynamic capabilities interact across different contexts and time horizons. Ongoing research focuses on how these mechanisms support not only short-term crisis response but also long-term transformation, including the development of digital business models, participation in innovation ecosystems, and adaptation to broader societal challenges.
This project contributes to advancing theoretical and practical understanding of organizational resilience by linking open innovation and dynamic capabilities to crisis management and long-term adaptation.  It provides actionable insights for managers and policymakers on how to design strategies and ecosystems that enable SMEs to navigate disruption and strengthen long-term competitiveness.
